Pocono Speed Cushion Project

Over the past year, the Pocono Civic Association has shared updates on Chesterfield County’s proposed pilot project to reduce dangerous speeding by installing two speed cushions on Pocono Drive. In the coming weeks, each Pocono household will have the opportunity to vote on the proposal.   Next steps and FAQs are below.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Chesterfield County will mail postcards to each home. These postcards will include instructions for voting to support or oppose the installation of speed cushions.

Please vote – your voice matters! If at least 50% of households vote in favor, the project will proceed.

FAQ

What is a Speed Cushion?
A speed cushion is a traffic calming device that includes wheel cutouts so emergency vehicles can pass them undeterred. Chesterfield County has published a web page about speed cushions with visuals here.

Why is Chesterfield County considering installing speed cushions in Pocono?
Following numerous reports of cars traveling at unsafe speed in our neighborhood, the county conducted a speed surveillance study. This revealed that our neighborhood may benefit from speed cushions to reduce dangerous passenger vehicle speeds.

Where would these be installed?
Chesterfield County’s proposal is to install two sets of speed cushions near the entrance to our neighborhood on Pocono Drive, between the intersections with Dimock Dr. and Renovo Ln. The County sought and has received approval from the homeowners adjacent to the proposed speed cushions. This location was chosen based on the number of cars observed passing at a high rate of speed during the speed surveillance study.

Will the county add speed cushions to other locations in our neighborhood?
At this time, the county’s plans only include the upper part of Pocono Drive. However, this is a pilot project and if successful, we could request further speed cushions from the county at a future date.

What is the speed limit in Pocono?
25 miles per hour.

Why is the Pocono Civic Association involved?
In 2025, the topic of addressing speed in our neighborhood came up at all four membership meetings. In all four meetings, attendees expressed support for pursuing this proposed pilot. On behalf of our membership, the Pocono Civic Association has acted as a contact for Chesterfield County officials as the project has progressed and has provided updates to our membership at our regular meetings. We will continue to communicate about the project when we receive new information.
